Usually a Coffered Ceiling is aesthetic, in that it is not structural in any way. In these cases the beams are constructed using 1" material and finished to be given the look of a solid beam. After the beam installation each individual "box" that has been formed is trimmed with a Crown Molding detail or a Cornice detail.
